Quick Sustainability Idea!

By: Ellie Fichtelberg

A concept that has been around for a while but has recently become a growing trend is the idea of a capsule wardrobe. Creating a capsule wardrobe essentially is the process of consumers cutting down their closet sizes to the barenecesseities or exactly what they need in terms of clothing items. The golden number is 37 pieces. These pieces mixed and matched will allow you to have a complete wardrobe that is fit for every season. That same tank top you were wearing with jeans in the summer is the perfect winter outfit once you add a statement jacket or trench coat. You don’t need a lot and probably have most of the basics in your closet now!

So, how is this helpful for the environment? A capsule wardrobe is about people purchasing only the most basic and functional pieces. That means these clothing items are staples to your wardrobe that can be maintained for a long period of time. On top of that, these are timeless pieces that you will never go out of style. This helps you stay more organized and combats overconsumption because you are only purchasing things that you need. It is important to stop purchasing in large quantities because the fashion industry produces 20% of global wastewater and 10% of all carbon emissions. These products are made with lots of gases and pollution that you are better off shopping small. Likewise, it is very difficult to dispose of clothes in a safe manner for the environment. Instead of just getting only one or two uses out of the items you will be able to maximize their life before throwing the items away or donating them.
